This month I set out to create 31 new pieces of art in the month of January. Perhaps a bit lofty, and maybe a bit foolish as I naturally didn't account for how much time this was going to take. But I made the commitment to myself with these goals in mind:
For artists, the first couple of months of the year are typically the slowest = more time.
-
A way to jump start creativity and create without inserting too many of my own filters.
-
Inspiration comes in many different forms and shapes. Perhaps ideas created this month will transform into even greater work later.
-
Habits - it sounds rather mechanical to try and engineer creativity into a habit. But there are some days when the juices aren't flowing and the mere act of doing is manifests creativity. So habit building, in this case, is to create the foundation and discipline.

Have fun. Not everyone of these will be masterpieces, or even fine art, but I want to thoroughly enjoy the process of making.
I move into February relieved that I can now work at a much slower and more methodical pace, but also content that I've hit my goals above and I have some fun ideas to put into place moving forward.
Naturally, as each day came about, the topic of mind varied; wildly, in some cases. So I've sorted these pieces into galleries of their own for ease of viewing. Enjoy!
The Aerialists
Inspired by a photo shoot I did with Dragonfly Aerial Co. These were some of the images that didn't make it into the calendar, but they were still pretty incredible to say the least. Unconstrained, I was able to dive deeper into my imagination and feed that wild part of me that perhaps wished I had run off and joined the circus!
A Touch of Mystery
These particular pieces were inspired by a few different things - 1. My online course practicing astral projection. Yes, it's a little out there but one should not be afraid to engage in what is considered to be "woo woo" because doors open when one isn't held back by their own limiting shackles. "Free Your Mind." Which brings me to 2. I watched the new Matrix movie. I wouldn't recommend it and we immediately put on the first one to wash the taste out of our mouths. The first one is SO good and I view it as a metaphor to how most of our lives our spent...living in our own prisons by personal design.
Take them for what you will.
Renée Magritte
As opposed to René Magritte. If you've been following me for any time at all, you know that I am very much inspired by the surrealism of Rene Magritte. So I took it upon myself to create my own female versions, complete with bowler hat and all, of some of his famous paintings. I went through the archives pulling background scenes from my travels to Iceland, Costa Rica, Montana & Wyoming. These were so much fun to make!
Wonder
"Never lose that childlike wonder..." And I never intend to. These pieces evoke a sense of play; whether it's getting naked in a sand dune in the middle of a national park, running around a poppy field, or twirling on top of a giant table in the middle of a restaurant. Proof that even when you're in your 40's, it's encouraged to remember what it's like to be wild and free. It keeps us young, keeps us energized and keeps us content.
Silhouettes
I actually enjoyed making these pieces more than I expected. Originally I thought I would pair the silhouettes with nature scenes, but they didn't work so well for this particular profile of my niece. So instead, I looked to old stock photos I took in France. Then suddenly, I became fascinated by how the intricate details of French architecture molded and mimicked the shape of a body. Gives way to how easy it is to personify buildings as "women." This was one of those ideas to tuck away for the future.
Le Chateau des Animaux
I can't get enough of this chateau. I've used it often in my work and I continue to be inspired by the lush colors, attention to detail and old world feel. Paired with lions and tigers, sans bears! I hope you love these as much as I do!
