SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT
It was a huge honor to spend time with this family in their summer home on Fire Island, NY. Every year, they would make the trek up there from Austin, Texas, to spend a couple of months away from the Texas heat and enjoy their time on the beach with sand between their toes.
It's a magical place, an escape from the bustle of the city. (Motor vehicles are not even permitted on the island so one navigates by foot, bike, wagon or ferry, depending on how far one needs to travel.) A place these two lucky kids will fondly look back when they're older, reminiscing of their summers on the island...a home away from home.
For this commission, the goal was to re-create that sense of wonder and travel they experienced every summer, almost like going to Never Never Land. When the sun came through their home during the afternoon, it sparkled and created a warm glow, engulfing the space in a blanket of light...creating the perfect backdrop.
The end result, a magical memory of childhood.
