Come & Stay
A few months have passed since our beloved fur baby, Shelby, leapt over the rainbow bridge. The void was palpable. We were always looking for her in the corner, following our stead, waiting for us at the door... It was weird to be out and about for an hour without our minds shifting, thinking we needed to return home to let her out. It's amazing how much another presence can have an impact on our day to day. Maybe not so surprising...dog people understand.
In those last months, we told each other it would likely be awhile before we decided to adopt a new musketeer with hopes to travel. But honestly, who knows when that will actually happen. As an optimist, I'd like to think we can see a light at the end of the tunnel...but then again France just went on lockdown once again. It's hard to say what the future will hold but I've never been one to sit around and wait.
For years Awesome has jokingly tried to convince me how wonderful it would be to have a wolf for a pet! Needless to say, that was never going to happen so instead, we started to ponder the idea of a husky. They are a distant relative to the wolf, after all. Perfect for living in Colorado. Perhaps the perfect compromise?!
Then as luck would have it, an article came across my feed announcing an overwhelmed breeder who released more than 50 huskies to the Humane Society. We just looked at each other. It's as if all the stars aligned and the universe opened up to grant us our wish.
Meet Blue. A two-year-old, striking fellow with eyes that mirror the sky. Aptly named.
Be careful what you wish for...
We've never owned a rescue before. And we clearly didn't do our homework before bringing a husky into our home. The Humane Society told us in these situations rescues take much longer to assimilate. They aren't socialized with people. There would likely be accidents. We would need extensive training...etc. We nodded robotically. So mesmerized by the idea that we didn't fully understand the weight of our decision.
So here we are. There's a third creature in our home and it's as if we invited an exotic animal to come to dine with us for dinner. He stares rather stoically with those penetrating eyes. He speaks in puffs of air and quick monosyllabic barks. And on occasion, I believe he's flipped us the paw! Yes, we adopted a teenager. That's right, we don't actually have kids but still manage to own a teenager. Somewhere someone is looking down upon us and laughing hysterically.
But in between those moments of despondent behaviour brings a ridiculous levity as he runs laps in the backyard at full speed, grunting at every turn. Or his frequent attempts at making snow angels when the weather is primed. Or despite how skittish he may be around people, he lights up and springs into action every time he sees another dog. So far he's never met a dog he didn't like.
Yes, we are madly in love with him. We anxiously await for the day when he can return the sentiment.

Behind the Scenes of Come & Stay
Spring is here! Not quite in Colorado. Since we sit a mile high, it's not uncommon for that crazy snowstorm to fly in as late as Mother's Day. The trees are just now starting to put out leaves and the early blooming bulbs are bringing color to an otherwise bare landscape.
But that's not the case in other parts of the world. Visions of cherry blossoms continue to pop up on my social media feeds as the trees puff to perfection this time of year in the DC area. A bit pink with envy, I dove into the archives remembering my first Spring in the DMV area when we lived in Virginia. It was only six years ago, but feels like a lifetime.
We lived close to a dog park within walking distance. It was long and narrow and perfect for allowing owners to bring their dogs into the park without disrupting the pack; the pack was already dispersed. The park itself was a quarter of a mile long with access to the stream. And in the springtime, the magnolia trees burst into beautiful shades of blush and taffy with a side of flamingo. I remember bringing my camera in, taking off my shoes, and walking barefoot (yes, in a dog park!) to capture the essence of the season.
So it only seems fitting to create this new piece as we welcome a new dog into our home. Shelby approved.
